Amrita Pritam

Amrita Pritam (1919-2005) was a prominent 20th century Punjabi woman poet. Born in Gujranwala, she began writing at an early age.

In 1947, at the time of partition, she moved to New Delhi. In 1956, Amrita Pritam became the first woman poet to win the Sahitya Akademi Award. Her poem ‘Ajj Aakhan Waris Shah Nu‘ is a hauntingly beautiful poem addressed to the author of immortal epic of love, Heer Ranjha. It is a plea for a return to the days of love and brotherhood among the people of Punjab.
