Lyrics

loye loye pharh le kurhye
je tudh bhaandha pharnaa
shaam payi binn shaam muhammad
ghar jaandi nai ddarna

sadaa na baageen bulbul bole
sadaa na baag baharaan
sadaa na maa pe husn javaani
sadaa na sohbat yaaraan

baal chiraag ishq da mere
roshan karde seena
dil de deeve di rushnaayi
jaave vich zameena

maali da kam paani paana
bhar bhar mashkaan pave
maalik da kam phal phul laana
laave ya na laave

dushman mare te khushiyaa na kariye
sajna vi mar jaana
deegar te din hoya muhammad
aorhak nu ddub jaana

phans gayi jaan shikanje andar
jeyon belan vich gannaa
rau nu kaho hunh rehve muhammad
je rehve ta main manna

baag bahaaraan te gulzaaraan
bin yaaraan ki kaari
yaar milan te muhammad baksha
shukr karaan lakh vaari

masjid ttaa de mandar ttaa de
ttaa de jo kuj ttainda
ik banded a dil na ttaaveen
rabb dilaan vich rehnda

Translation

come young girl and fill your pitcher while it is yet evening
for once the darkness descends, o’ mohammad
you will become afraid

not forever will these nightingale sing in the garden
nor will this garden remain eternally in spring
not forever your mother, father, your youthful beauty
not forever this company of friends

kindle my lamp of love and enlighten my heart
that the light of the flame
may spread out across the world

it is the gardener’s task to water the garden
pitcher after flowing pitcher
it is the master’s task to reap the fruits and flowers
whether he chooses to do so or not

do not rejoice at the death of your enemy
your friend shall also pass away
every afternoon sun, o’ mohammad
must finally set

my life is ensnared in this trap
like sugarcane in the crusher
now try and stop the juice from flowing, o’ mohammad
when it stops, i will believe

though the roses may bloom in the garden of spring
without the friend it is all nothing
when the friend is found o’ mohammad bakhsh!
i am grateful a thousand fold

destroy the mosque, destroy the temple
break all that you want
but never break a human heart
for that is where the lord dwells
